Voice Over IPThe Next Biggest Thing is Voice Over IPMany people have already discovered the advantages of voice over IP or VoIP. The acronym stands for voice over Internet Protocol. All this basically means to the average non-technical consumer is that you use your computer to make your phone calls. In the early days, you would have to sit at your computer with a microphone and speakers to make it work. Now, only a few years down the road, you use a regular phone and aren’t aware of any differences unless you stop to think about it. In order to make the service work, you’ll need a telephone adapter and a router. The service provider will lease, sell, or give you the adapter. If you don’t already own a router you can also get that from the voice over IP provider or shop around for the best price. Once you’re set up, you shouldn’t be able to tell the difference when you’re talking to someone. Because voice over IP is relatively new, there are a number of companies trying to get into the mix. Chief among them are existing telephone and cable television companies. In fact many of them hope to provide their subscribers with Internet, cable TV, and VoIP all in one package. This of course is attractive to users because they can view their monthly usage all on one bill, plus take advantage of package offers from the providers. The rapid expansion of our high-tech world is pretty amazing. It seems to grow faster on a daily basis. For example, voice over IP was just a blip on the horizon a few short years ago. Now it’s standard for many companies and residential consumers. In this short span of time the quality has improved tremendously and the range of services has grown by leaps and bounds. Don’t be surprised in a few more years if VoIP entirely replaces the old ways of calling our friends, relatives, and business associates. Other Voice Over IP / VOIP articles |
