Internet Telephony VOIPInternet Telephony VoIP: An Idea who's Time has ComeNot that many years ago, making telephone calls via the Internet was being talked about, but not expected to make a big hit. In just a few short years, all the big providers are offering VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), and customers love it. One of the main reasons is that they can bundle their services and save some money. Plus it's easier to pay just one bill for a number of communication accounts. In this case they combine their Internet service, digital TV service, and telephony, all in one. Although this is highly convenient, there are a few drawbacks. For one thing not all providers have ironed the bugs out of their Internet telephony VoIP, so calling isn't always as clear as one would like. That's why it's important to choose an experienced provider. For another, there are security issues. Unless software engineers come up with general use encryption methods or ways for caller-to-caller lines to be secured, this technology is ripe for hackers to have a heyday with private conversations. That certainly isn't to say that that VoIP is a poor idea. Like every new technology there are always bugs to work out. The fact is that VoIP is often used within large companies and they have security systems in place. As for personal use, so far the benefits seem to far outweigh any risks for the consumer, as more and more people are signing up for the service everyday. The advantages are many:
The one downfall that individual consumers worry about is the fact that when there are power outages, the phone service goes down. Thanks to the popularity of cell phones however, this hasn't proven much of a drawback. Internet technology tends to spread by word-of-mouth. Those who are tech-savvy lead the way and spread the word to the skeptics. Just think back to the recent past when so many people were afraid to shop via the Internet. Now it's common except for a few holdbacks. The future of Internet technology VoIP will surely follow the trend. Before we know it the majority of phone calls will originate over the web.
