Is an Online University for You?

There are several million students attending online universities…so how can you know if this method of learning is right for you? Every choice we make involves sorting out advantages and disadvantages. It's up to each individual to sort out the differences and decide which way they want to go based on their own circumstances. That's true if you're thinking of enrolling in an online university.

The advantages of studying online are many. The main ones include flexibility and convenience. Most online universities let students work at their own pace, at least to some degree. Each class usually requires students to attend a certain number of hours. Unlike their on-ground counterparts however, these students choose when it's convenient for them to log on. Class discussions often occur through email or newsgroup threads, so as long as they show up as often as needed, they easily meet their participation hours.

Often they work on group and individual projects, but again they choose when they do them. If they work all day and come home to a family for example, late night, early morning, and week-ends may be the most convenient study times. Obviously, this makes for an extremely busy life, but if they're dedicated these students will tough it out and emerge with a degree.

Another perk is not hassling with a commute. Most online universities don't ask students to come to a campus. If they do, it's usually only once or twice during a class and more often the entire program. This means there is no working out inconvenient bus schedules, fighting traffic, searching for an illusive parking spot, and walking across a big campus. Saving this much time and money is one of the most attractive aspects of distance learning.

An online university takes many forms, and there is surely one that's perfect for you. So many schools now embrace this format, that there are literally thousands of schools and programs to choose from. You can work for a certificate, under or post graduate degree, or just take classes for fun. The fact that online universities bring the possibility of higher learning to many that may have missed out is truly a marvelous gift of our high tech age.

There aren't too many disadvantages. Probably the main one is the lack of face-to-face contact between students and instructors. Another is lack of accreditation. Both of these situations are solvable. With so many ways to communicate, if you want to get together with other students, it shouldn't take too much effort to find people with common educational interests. As for making sure your degree is valid, be sure you do some careful research of online universities before you enroll.
