Credit Cards To Eliminate Debt

Tread Carefully if you Plan to use Credit Cards to Eliminate Debt

We are seduced everyday by ads offering us low interest and even no interest credit cards. Running up debt – “charging it” -- is the American way, and we almost feel unpatriotic if we don’t have several cards in our wallets. We get solicitations in the mail telling us that we’re pre-approved for thousands of dollars. We see television spots urging us to come buy a houseful of furniture with no interest for a year, or a new car with “no money down and low interest”. Sometimes there are no payments required for many months.

Have you recently filed bankruptcy? No problem, you too will receive credit card applications, offers from car companies and even banks and mortgage brokers. Some people are so taken in by these rosy pictures that they’ll actually take out credit cards to eliminate debt.

There are a few circumstances where this might be a workable plan. If you’ve fallen into the payday loan trap and owe an agency thousands of dollars in fees and interest for a loan you couldn’t repay in time, you may do better to pay it off with a lower interest credit card. Or maybe you have several cards that are maxed out, if your credit is still good, you could qualify for a card that charges nothing for 6-12 months when you transfer other balances. If you decide to use credit cards to eliminate debt, use good sense and self-discipline.

Don’t be foolish and go shopping with your new credit card. The minute you’re approved, transfer the balances you’re paying off. Don’t even put the card in your wallet or purse; hide it in a safe place and forget it’s there. It’s sole purpose is to help you get out of debt and not further in. Also you’ll want to make sure that you can afford the monthly payment. The last thing you want to do is get behind when you do this type of consolidation.

Using credit cards to eliminate debt is a tricky business. A brand new card with no balance is so tempting. If you’ve found it easy to overextend yourself financially, then make a definite plan. Write out a budget including the new payment and stick to it. Cut back on some of those expenses that easily get out of hand…things like eating lunch in a restaurant instead of bringing it from home, making frequently stops at your favorite espresso shop, or even going out to see movies instead of renting, can save you more than you might think possible each month.
